Calligraphy journey
Starting my year with something new! I find that the idea of blogging and putting my own content is challenging. I used to blog during my younger years, and even became a contributor writer for our University magazine. And yet I don’t know how to start this entry.
So the best way to start is to introduce my Calligraphy journey and how my business started…
Year 2014 when I first seen my Instagram feeds with brush lettering posts. I was studying here in Melbourne and started doing bullet journaling as a form of my daily diary. I found out that some friends were practicing brush calligraphy. they said it is comforting and a form of relaxation for them. I wasn’t at all interested since I’m more into painting and doing arts. But after months of doing bullet journal, I find that I am beginning to hate my handwriting.
When I went home July 2017, a friend is hosting a point pen modern calligraphy workshop. Together with my best friend, we went and registered. Even though I watched tons of videos about brush lettering, I still didn’t know what I was doing. So I listened and watched my friend instructor during the demonstration. Back in Melbourne, I started accumulating some calligraphy materials and practicing on and off. I just bought cricut at some point since I want to to my own stickers for journalling.
Christmas 2018, I decided to finally use up my calligraphy writing with cricut and do some DIY projects to gift to people. A colleague saw one of my gifts then asked me if I can do a commission work for him for New year’s eve gifts to friends. I got excited and started researching how much to charge.
By January 2019, I registered myself legally and got ABN. Just doing the business on the side for friends and family.
During 2020 pandemic, I got stood down from my main job (as a chef). Luckily, I have Skillshare and begun taking more calligraphy and art classes. That’s when I decided to dedicate my time to doing calligraphy as a business seriously. By end of September 2020, I launched my website and etsy account. Still don’t know what I am doing. Learning as I go along.
It has been almost 6 years since I started calligraphy and 3 years for my business. I am continuing to improve everything from my calligraphy, products and people skills. Join me along with my journey.
